I added a whole room to my apartment, for free.
So I noticed I haven't seen a lot of posts in this community lately, but I woke up the other morning, looked around me, and said "Hey, I bet thrifty sauce would be interested in this!"

How I back up the outrageous claim in my title: A few weeks ago, I was looking at the walk in closet that we do not use effectively, and I said to my boyfriend, "You know, that closet is 6'6" by 6'8". We could fit the bed in there."

He said, "We totally should. Then we could have an office."

I said, "Are you sure? The room would be all bed, except for an 18" strip by the opening."

He said, "So?"

So we sold the stuff in our ineffectively used closet, and our old bed frame, and used the money to buy lumber to make a new bed frame (the old frame wouldn't have fit in the closet, which is exactly the length of the mattress). It was a little tricky because the bed frame had to be assembled in the closet since it would take up all the space and not be able to be moved in afterward. But we managed.

This is the chandelier you can see in some of the photos, it's an old bike wheel that's not rideable anymore, and some icicle lights. It's an aluminum rim wheel, so the whole thing is very, very light, I'd guess under 5 pounds. So, I'm not too worried about it falling on us. It's also less crooked than it looks in this photo, though it probably could use a little straightening.

This is one of the new bed's occupants, Rosie.

I'm pretty happy with it, and hope to get some office photos up soon, because we had a big bedroom and so our office makes our place feel huge. Meanwhile, I feel pretty good about the new bedroom, but I'm trying to get a more coherent design scheme and color story to go with the purple walls. We don't have room for a headboard, and I'm trying not to buy all new bedding, because that's expensive, just add/replace a few pieces in to make the mostly green go with the purple walls while not making me green/yellow/blue quilt look out of place. I'm also not sure what to do for art. I was thinking of going down to the local habitat for humanity and buying a window to hang on the wall to make it more of a "room", but I'd love to hear all ideas.

This is awesome! It almost makes me want to pull the clothes out of my walk in closet. But my bed is a CA king and I have a **LOT** of clothes. Hmm, maybe I could use the bedroom as my closet. If only I didn't have a boyfriend.

Well, we only did this because we had another, smaller closet that contained all our hanging clothes. We still have the dresser in the office, but it's kind of sideboard-looking, so it's okay looking. I think.

I could see lots of reasons a boyfriend wouldn't like it. I have just the right set of circumstances that it's okay. My boyfriend likes sleeping against a wall, and doesn't mind climbing over me. I am a deep sleeper, and don't notice someone climbing over me for a glass of water in the middle of the night. Also, I stay up later reading, so having an overhead light and a nightstand on my side covers all lighting needs.

Good thinking! I especially love the light. I'm excited to see how the office turns out.

And I totally agree--this comm has been dead for SO long! It's nice to see a post here again.

I'm excited for the office too, it's at that stage where I totally don't know what it's going to be.

I'm toying with the idea of entering my apartment in apartment therapy's small cool contest this year (obviously the bedroom needs more work before that) to motivate me to get some things done, so I may be staging a one woman come back for this community. Hopefully other people get reminded it's here and join in.

apartment therapy has had a bunch of articles lately about alternative or diy headboards lately!

I noticed that. Definitely got me thinking. I love the door ones, but getting a door back to my apartment is an ordeal, and with the bed against the wall, I couldn't center it over the bed. That's what got me thinking about windows.

I think this idea is so incredible, and it looks SO good. When I was a kid, there was a while where my bed at my dad's was half in my closet. It was one of those wide, shallow wall closets (explaining it is hard...) and I thought it was just SO COOL to have a little cave.
I really love your chandelier. But I think my favorite part of this post is the sassy pic of Rosie with her tongue out!

You're so kind to say so! I know exactly what kind of closet you're talking about, and I love that look, too. It's like the ultimate headboard I think, having the wall itself recess to accommodate your bed.

I think there's something deep in the instinctual, animal part of my brain that really likes sleeping in lofts and nooks, and I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one.

Rosie held that pose for a full minute before I snapped a picture. She's a strange one.

I've actually thought about doing this before, but never did. I wasn't sure how it would turn out - but I'm glad to see that it turned out GREAT!! I wish I had a walk-in so I could do this. :) Good job!!

Thank you for saying so. I'm pretty happy with it, especially with how much bigger it just made my apartment.

this is the best thing ive seen all day! great idea!

It would be really cute to have some glow in the dark stars all over, but they are terrible for painted walls! D: still though.. i love this!!

This is just too awesome! It's you and your boyfriends' 'nest' so to speak.
